About Me

I’m William Thyer, I work remotely as a data scientist in Chicago, IL. I have 9 years of experience solving difficult problems with data and maching learning. I earned my PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Chicago in 2023. I like cognitive science, bicycles, urbanism, and I’m learning Spanish.

At Cohere Health I built, deployed, and monitored ML and LLM systems to automate prior authorization decisions. Those models have approved hundreds of thousands of prior auth requests, and extracted information from hundreds of thousands of clinical documents.

I was a PhD researcher in the Awh/Vogel Lab at the University of Chicago where I used machine learning and EEG to study working memory. I ran experiments, built open-source analysis tools, and published papers in high-impact journals.

I did summer internships at Intuitive Surgical, building real-time ML feedback for surgeons in robotic surgery training; and Spark Neuro, building ML tools and visualizations to detect neurological disorders.
